Freeport Presbyterian Church

Our pastor, Rev. H. Eugene (Gene) Harris is originally from Memphis, Tennessee and has been active in church since the time of his conversion to Christ at the age of 14.  He has been a pastor and an Air Force chaplain for a combined ministry of over 40 years.

Gene lived in Huntsville, Alabama at the time of his graduation from high school due to his father working at NASA.  After serving a 3 year enlistment in the U.S. Army, Gene received his B.S. degree from Southwestern University in Texas.  He then went on to earn his Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary where, in 1973, he was ordained into the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  Shortly after graduation, Gene was called as pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Swainsboro, Georgia.

Gene has served as a pastor in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi.  Prior to being called to pastor in Freeport, he was called by the Presbyterian Council for Chaplain and Military Personnel in Washington D.C. to be a Chaplain in the United States Air Force.  He rose to the rank of Colonel in the Chaplain Corps and served in the Air Force until retiring in 1999.  After a short break, he accepted the call from the Florida Presbytery to serve in Freeport at Freeport Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Gene is married to his outgoing and charming wife, Cleta Funderburk, of Clarksdale, Mississippi.  They have two sons, Greg and Tony.  Their two grandsons, Jacob and Charlie of Phoenix, Arizona complete their wonderful family.
